The GCBC coordinates counts every spring and fall as part of the North American Migrating Bird Count. Like the Christmas Bird Count, this widespread volunteer-driven effort helps develop a better understanding of bird status and distribution. Where the Christmas Counts are conducted in a 15-mile-diameter circle, Migration Counts are organized for certain counties. Ours is held in Greenville County. Counts are typically scheduled for a Saturday near the peak of migration, keeping the following Sunday as an alternative date in case of bad weather. See below for more information.
With the help of many individual leaders we will cover as much of Greenville County as possible. Reports are also encouraged from back-yard birders. Past Greenville County Migration Counts have resulted in well over 100 species.
